The Sinister Horror Film Festival returns for its third edition in Mexico City, continuing its search for outstanding horror from around the world.
Created by filmmakers, Sinister was built around a simple idea: exceptional work deserves more than a submission status, a selection notice, or a laurel. The people behind it deserve to be seen, presented, and recognized.
Our competition brings together filmmakers, screenwriters, animators, musicians, photographers, performers, and creative teams working across horror and related dark genres.
We are not looking for a particular budget, production scale, career level, or filmmaking formula.
We are looking for exceptional work.
Every submission is considered on the strength of the work itself, with attention to storytelling, direction, atmosphere, visual identity, technical execution, originality, craft, and overall impact.
For those selected, Sinister is designed to be more than a place where a project appears on a program. Through our physical festival in Mexico City, curated online programming, nominations, awards, official communications, and editorial coverage, we aim to make participating creators an active part of the festival experience.

Our programming welcomes horror and related dark genres, including psychological horror, supernatural horror, thrillers, sci-fi horror, dark fantasy, experimental work, gothic and surreal approaches, and other forms of dark storytelling.
Each submission is evaluated according to the nature of its category and the strength of its execution.
THE SINISTER AWARD®
The Sinister Award® is the highest distinction presented by the festival.
Reserved for Best Feature Film and Best Live-Action Short Film, it recognizes the works that represent the highest standard of filmmaking within their respective competitions.
The Sinister Award® is represented by a distinctive sculptural trophy created specifically for the festival — a physical symbol of the recognition earned by its recipients.
More than another category prize, it marks the defining achievement of each edition and places its recipients within the growing history of Sinister.

45 OFFICIAL AWARD CATEGORIES
Sinister recognizes excellence not only in complete works, but also in the individual disciplines and artists that make them possible.
Across 45 official award categories, the festival celebrates achievements in directing, performance, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, production design, costume design, sound, original music, special makeup effects, visual effects, practical effects, creature design, animation, documentary, music video, photography, and other areas of horror filmmaking and visual creation.
Sinister also presents genre-specific distinctions including Best Villain, Best Kill, and Most Disturbing Film, celebrating elements that belong unmistakably to the language and tradition of horror.
The Audience Award adds another voice to the Sinister Awards, giving festival audiences the opportunity to recognize the work that leaves the strongest impression on them.
From the highest honors to individual craft recognitions, every award exists for the same reason:

FROM OFFICIAL SELECTION TO THE SINISTER AWARDS
Being selected is only the beginning of the festival experience.
Throughout the edition, participating works may progress from Official Selection to Nominee, culminating in the announcement of the winners during the Sinister Awards.
This progression is designed to give each stage of recognition its own significance and to allow filmmakers, artists, and audiences around the world to follow the festival as it unfolds.
Selected work may also be presented through Sinister’s official digital channels, curated festival programming, and editorial ecosystem, including Sinister Magazine.
